Chameleon Zip-on Underquilt
$260.00 – $340.00
We’ve partnered with Jacks R’ Better to make this unique underquilt designed specifically for our Chameleon hammock. Why? Having an underquilt that zips right onto the modular Chameleon Hammock, eliminates much of the guess work/fidget factor of setting up your underquilt. The Chameleon Zip-on Underquilt works in conjunction with ALL of our Chameleon accessories as well as our Wide and 12-foot Chameleons. The Argon 90 zip-on underquilt will keep your hammock aligned with the quilt, greatly reducing the opportunity for air to flow through which can create cold pockets. Shock Cord at the head and foot end of the underquilt allow you to adjust accordingly for optimal snugness. Our standard quilt comes in Dark Olive outer shell with Black inner shell.
Please note: This underquilt currently has a lead time of 5-6 weeks. Items included in the same order will all be shipped together when the underquilt is available to ship.
Description
We’ve partnered with Jacks R’ Better to make this unique underquilt designed specifically for our Chameleon hammock.
All Jacks ‘R’ Better quilts are over stuffed by at least 25%. We do not recommend additional over stuffing.
Compression Sack: A lot of folks no longer use compressions sacks and instead keep their quilts dry inside a lawn contractor bag or trash compactor liner. We do not want anyone to have to pay for something they do not want so now we offer them separately. For 0 degree quilts we recommend a large size compression sack.
Activ-dri down™ – Activ-dri™ is a hydrophobic down treatment that keeps the down drier, while having no adverse effects on loft, fill power, or warmth retention. Activ-dri down is still down insulation and should be protected from direct exposure to moisture. All types of insulation, whether down or synthetic, will degrade in insulation capability if wetted. This down is certified to the Responsible Down Standard.
Jacks ‘R’ Better has designed a unique hammock underquilt with a dual differential cut, body contoured design and constant height radial baffles to achieve a 0° capability. These are the most capable and warmest commercially available hammock underquilts.

Love the design of this! Dutch and JRB rock! No annoying shifting of underquilt since it’s zipped on. Easy to attach or remove, works great with all my other chameleon tops.

Hello
Interested by this product for my Wide Chameleon to use during weathers with a range of temperatures between 15°F and 45°F.
I’m not used to underquilts at all since i used mats in hammocks so far, so I’m wondering if the 20 degree version of this underquilt would be ok with a proper sleeping bag, Or is the 0 degree better?
I don’t mind adding a thin mat in the hammock if really needed (R-value 1).

Greetings, the temp rating is for comfort. So it’s really a personal preference depending on how hot or cold you sleep. Everyone is different in this aspect so there is no one temp rating fits all solution.

Hi Dutch,
Just curious what colors are going to be offered on the standard JRB zip-in once the pre-order is over?
Thanks!

Customer Service –
The standard offering will be the Dark Olive. IF we add more color options (no guarantees), it will only be 2-3 and we will use the pre-order’s as a way to determine what is most popular.

Question

I am very interested in the zip on underquilt for my 12 ft chameleon. I recently hung in 34 deg weather with my incubator UQ. It’s possible I didn’t have it adjusted perfectly for a 12 hammock, but I did get cool in spots from underneath. I was going to get a 0 deg incubator until I saw the zip on UQ you now offer. I live in Northern California and will never see weather under mid twenties. I like being toasty from underneath, but want to be able to use in other seasons. I’m learning towards another 20 deg Underquilt or could I make a 0 deg work in the summer. Weight is not an issue…
Thanks

Greetings, my intuition says get a zero degree, and hold onto your 20 degree for use in the warmer months. Otherwise, everyone’s body temperatures and temperament for hot vs cold is such a personal experience, it’s hard to answer what would be best for you.

It says 53” wide. I wish it was wider. I’m concerned it will make my 12’ chameleon feel cramped

Customer Service –
Greetings, thank you for sharing your concern. Dutch explains that since you are laying on a diagonal, you are not using the full width of the hammock (as in laying completely sideways) and that is why this zip-on chameleon works with the wide and 12-ft Chameleon options. Perhaps it will be best for you to hold tight for now and see what kind of feedback others who use it for their wide and 12-foot hammocks have. =)

ryan-6008 –
Is it possible to customize the insulation for a higher fill-power? Does the inner fabric use Argon 90 as well, or a lighter weight calendered fabric like Argon 67 or Argon 49, and if not will this be an option in the furture?

Customer Service –
Hi Ryan, this is not a product that we will be able to customize the way we do many of our other products. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I preordered the 20 degree under quilt in Coyote Brown to match my hammock (I like disappearing in the woods in my back yard). I was finally able to get out and use it the past two nights.
Zipping it on was simple. I just unzipped my bug net on one side, zipped on the under quilt, then zipped on the bug net. Repeat the procedure on the other side, and it’s done! The zipper runs the full length of the hammock, so there’s a stretch of empty zipper at either end, since the under quilt only needs to be in the middle. Great system! There is a string (not shock cord) with a cord lock on both sides to pull each end of the under quilt tight up to the hammock to prevent drafts. It works well, I like that it is string that won’t wear out like shock cord will, though I’m considering running a piece of shock cord through and trying that to see if it works better, worse or the same.
I slept out one night with a predicted 50 degrees F low. I had just a wool blanket over me and was a little chilly because just the wool blanket was not enough. The next night was a low of 60 degrees F, I had my 30 year old sleeping bag (was rated at 20 or 30 degrees F 30 years ago, but is now only good for about 50 degrees F) as my blanket and I was snug as a bug in a rug! The night I was chilly was not the fault of the under quilt, which performed admirably; it was because I didn’t have enough over quilt! From underneath, I was plenty warm. I’m looking forward to getting out on the trail with my son’s Scout troop and giving this (along with the hammock) some good use. That said, during the warmer months, I’m also planning to spend one to two nights a week sleeping out in between two perfect trees in my back yard!
I’d like to see a recommendation of what double ended stuff sack to purchase with the under quilt as the one that came with my hammock is not large enough for both.
