Last weekend we camped out in very wet conditions just above freezing. My tarp kept my dry and my new hammock sock trapped in some heat and kept the breezes at bay! Nice addition to my cold weather setup, thanks Dutchware team!

I like winter camping and this easily extends the temperature rating of my 15 degree top and bottom quilts. Gives me peace of mind is the weather turns really bad…helps keep my bottom quilt high n dry off the snow/dirt. If the wind kicks bad I’m easily as protected as if in a tent in combo with my fly.
If you like to camp in frigid conditions….this is a great insurance policy. I thought about it one morning and I can not think of any change that would make it better. The zipper is perfectly placed and operates freely. The noseeum is just right. I use it on my ENO double nest with outdoors Vitals down 15 degree top+bottom quilts. Ill be thinking about dutch-wear products in the future. very happy so far.

I use an ENO double. The specs say it is a 10ft hammock. I have not measured it while hanging. What size should I use. I read in a previous text that you recommended a 9ft for someone with a 10 ft hammock. Would you recommend the same for my ENO?

If you rotate the sock, so that the netting is down, and there is light snow falling, and no tarp deployed over you, would the snow accumulate in the netting? How many degrees of 360 degrees does the netting use up in the sock?

Bryan Long (verified owner) –
I was lucky this year to win the lottery for a backcountry camping permit for The Enchantments (WA), for the first week of October. The larches will be golden, but it will be below freezing at night and will likely snow. In anticipation I just got this sock and have been using it outside at home. It’s a great fit for my Dutchware netless hammock, and the rotating bugnet window works great. Blocks the wind, and definitely raises the temperature inside. Makes my hammock a cozy cocoon. Rotating the sock to change the amount of bugnet window of course also changes where the zipper is, so it’s definitely useful to have your headlamp handy. Now all I need to do is decide whether to use my aging Warbonnet Superfly or buy a new, lighter winter tarp.

Question
Jiles Manning –
I typically lay “head left” in my hammock. The sock in the video looks like it is made for “head right”. So if I opened the zipper, sat down, and then laid back with my head going to my left, I would end up with my head at the opposite end from the vent. Is there a zipper on both sides or an option to have the zipper on the appropriate side for “head left”?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
Alex Thomas –
You can lay whichever direction you want inside of the sock as it doesn’t have single lay direction. When you get in, put your head at the vent side and lay whichever direction you’d like. If you want a custom item where the zipper is on the other side, just leave us a note in your order at checkout and we’ll make it happen.

After an unseasonably cold and rainy Spring camping trip, I realized I would need an underquilt protector or a windsock. I decided to go with the Dutchware winter sock.
It arrived on a cold day in April, when the temperatures were in the mid 30s and the wind was blowing 13-17 mph. Perfect for testing.
I tested this with my Warbonnet (WB) blackbird XLC hammock and the wooki under quilt.
First, I am old enough to remember canvas tents and heavy plastic camping gear. These modern fabrics still amaze me. This argon fabric is magical. It is lightweight and blocks wind in a way that seems impossible.
As I have gotten older, I found myself being colder in most situations. My wife and I both tested this out (she tends to be colder than I am even.) Testing independently, we both agreed that this winter sock blocked the wind and kept us warmer in the hammock.
How does the stack up against the competition? A WB top cover and UQ protector is far more expensive and weighs more. Nope! A RSBTR DIY kit is only about $20 less and I have to supply the labor. No thanks – too many projects on my bench already. A Chinese knockoff from Amazon is less money, but is less flexible and lower quality (I’ve had to replace zippers on several knock offs that I’ve purchased). If a camping item I’m buying cannot be multi use, then at least I want it to be flexible. And — to a degree— quality is worth paying for.
So let’s talk flexibility. 1. After you set it up, you can ‘spin’ this item so that you can look through the netting for warmer temps, or you can ‘spin’ it so that your face and head area are covered by material in colder weather (with the mesh on the bottom side of your hammock). 2. The wide opening at one end allows for easy deployment and also for a partial set up. So you can cover just your feet or just your legs and torso if you wish, leaving your face and head open to view the stars. By opening up the zipper, you can cover part of your hammock while leaving the side open to the sights. 3. The full zipper also allows for installation when your hammock is already up. 4. There’s lots of fabric on this sock, so it should fit any hammock on the market. 5. You can use it as a giant stuff sack – this thing easily holds a hammock, top quilt and under quilt. Pull the sock over your hang, undo the suspension, and cram it all into your pack.
One drawback that my adult daughter pointed out was that she couldn’t stake out the side of her WB Blackbird hammock with this sock in place. I don’t care if my hammock side is staked out. She does. So – word to the wise. (This is not a criticism of this product. Everything in camping is a trade-off. Just be aware of the trade-off you are willing to make. For me, being a little warmer is better than having my hammock side staked out. My daughter disagrees. Hang your own hang.)
Finally, small details matter. One of the things I appreciate about small cottage industries like Dutchware is that they continue to pay attention to small details. The zipper seems to be a good balance between lightweight and sturdy. The zipper pulls are comfortable. And the inside zipper pulls appear to be reflective, making them easier to find a night. I very much appreciate these small details that large companies often eliminate in order to save a few pennies.
Bottom line: this well made product will be accompanying me in my Spring, Winter, and Autumn trips to keep me a bit warmer. Well worth the money!

Question
j.gabe.perry –
Would using this with the Snugpak overquilt and underquilt be able to get down to mid twenties. I’ve gone down to mid thirties with the over and under quilt. If I can’t get that low with the sock, what would I have to add to be able to get that low?

Carolyn (verified owner) –
I would recommend using quilts rated for the temperatures that you will be out in and using the sock when needed for extra coverage. It will help to conceal or keep heat in however it is not the main source of heat as every climate may vary.

Hi John, what you see is a piece of bug net sewn onto solid fabric. So no, there is no “cover” to slide down with a bug net underneath. We do have a separate product that is all bug net. You can find that here: https://dutchwaregear.com/product/summer-sock/

Hi There ! Hope you’re doing good. I was wondering if that socks would fit my DD frontline XL ? I do not use ridgeline, but the spreader poles configuration. I am not concerned by the length, but the spreader poles+underquilt make my system quite a big “tunnel”, so I am wondering if the socks will be large enough to fit around this and still offer the necessary sag underneath ?
Thanks !

This is one of my favorite pieces of gear. I take it every time I hammock camp. When ever there is a cool breeze, a cold wind, or a wind and rain storm, this thing will add several degrees to your sleep system. It is not 100 percent water proof, but it has saved me several nights from sideways rain coming in under the tarp. Even when the wind is flapping the sock so loud you can’t sleep, I was able to continue through the night in comfort and peace of mind because I was warm and dry inside. The vent over my head gives me plenty of breathability, I’ve never had a condensation issue. Five stars A must have product.

I recently went on my first deep winter trip – temps well below -10F (it was -12 when we went to bed at 11PM – colder at night). This was my first time hammocking in the winter. As such after some research I came across this winter sock as a good solution for under my hammock tarp. When I woke up in the morning I was still warm and there was no condensation anywhere to be seen. A companion shook out a lot of ice out of his individual tent. All my gear was dry. The sock worked very well.
My only caveat is that I ordered the sock with the zipper – if I had to do it again I would order without – it is easier to just reach up and slide the sock closed over the ridgeline than to open and close the zipper. I have the zipper and I won’t use it again. I recommend the version of this sock without the zipper.

Owning this piece of gear isn’t even debatable when the temps are below 40 degrees. I’ve used this item several times this year in heavy wind, rain, and temps from the high 20’s to low 30’s. When used in these conditions, I am completely enveloped in my own safe microclimate. I have never experienced condensation, the peak vent is superbly positioned. The zipper is a dream to open and close because I can pull the entire sock towards me, and I am no longer at the mercy of my attached zippered bug net requiring me to perform acrobatics for urgent mid-morning nature calls.

The argon 90 fabric that is made of is water resistant as it is a DWR fabric however this doesn’t mean that it is waterproof. It will help in keeping the elements away from your under quilt but it is not again a complete waterproof fabric.

There are so many different factors when it comes to how much you can gain with a winter sock. Wind, no wind, dry or moist out, do you sleep hot or cold. So all that to say It will help you get closer to your goal but I would say at the most only 10°.

I did a spring backpacking trip this weekend in the wild river wilderness in the White Mountains of New Hampshire . Used this winter sock this past weekend where temps fell to 16°F. The sock blocked the cold wind that blew under the tarp and probably would protect my UQ from any outside moisture/condensation. This sock also blocked out most of the outside light and kept the temperature inside the sock several degrees warmer than the outside. NOTE: with an outside temp at 16°F there were minimal amounts of condensation that accumulated near the vented area above my head but nothing particularly uncomfortable. I purchased the sock with the zippered option. Both zippers glided easily and came with nice sized pulls that you could grasp easily even with thick gloves. Another bonus for ordering the zippers is that it allowed me to sit in the hammock with the sock unzipped so the top flap could be thrown back over the ridgeline. This kept my back and sides protected from any cold wind blowing while I sat back sipping my hot tea and enjoying the view.

I got this because i realized the blizzard survival bags i had been using were slowly disintegrating into minute glitter flakes which in addition to making my clothes sparkle i was no doubt inhaling. This sock is an improvement. No condensation, and i rigged a cheap under quilt from a costco-style down blanket. Only drawback I’ve noticed: the zipper is oddly wavy so opening and closing it is not as smooth as i think it should be. What i mean is the zipper is not flat as if it was not pulled flat while sewing it and so it must undulate to fit into the space it was sewed into. If i didn’t need to use this every night perhaps I’d attempt to get a flatter and smoother zippered one.

Condensation will always be a fact that you should consider and it really depends on how moist the air is and how cold it is outside. So I cannot gaurentee that there will be no condensation however the vent will definitely help you out with this and that is why it is vented as it is much safer.
