FIRST CRL FOR ME….WOW!I had always been curious to know what the fuss was about with CRL’s, so I purchased this to use with an old ENO tarp where the guy lines have worn out. I use Dutch’s Stingerz to string up my WBSF and WBCB tarps, but after seeing how easy and versatile the CRL is, I may go ahead and use it for my WB tarps instead. As with all my dealings with Dutch, the customer service is second to none and the quality I get from Dutchware is always better than I expected.

Question
dovid (verified owner) –
I have the CRL with a hook and a wasp. How tight do I cinch the line. I have found when I do it tightly the TATO is hard to loop / afix to it so as to prevent slipping?
Is a hook and wasp at each end more effective for a tight tarp.
Is that even a concern because I maybe doing it wrong?

Your ridgeline should be taunt so it will hold your tarp up however if you are having trouble putting any hardware on the line then you may just be cinching it down a bit to much. I would recommend that you watch Shugs videos on how to hang your tarp ridgeline as he may have some good pointers for you and then you can assess or readjust anything you may be doing incorrectly. Please see the following link:

Continuous ridgeline (with soft shackles) rocks!I was interested in Dutch’s continuous ridgeline, but had many questions to ask before knowing what exactly to order. After a brief conversation with Dutch during which we discussed the specific tarp that I use, the types of connections to the tarp, and how I wanted to tie out, I was ready to order.
I purchased the continuous ridgeline with soft shackles to use with my Clark Vertex tarp. I initially used Dutch’s hookworms, but eventually swapped them out in favour of Dutch’s Fleaz. The beauty of the ridgeline system is in the simplicity of setting up, taking down, and making adjustments. Sudden changes in the weather often prompt adjustments to my tarp. Often those changes in the weather happen in the middle of the night, so being able to make quick adjustments is appreciated especially when it is below freezing!

Luke Sabo –
I’m wondering if my HG cuben hex tarp would work better with tato clips or soft shackles. Figured the tato clips will be easier to work with in cold weather but don’t know if they will work with the type of tarp I have. Thanks in advance!

DutchWare Gear –
Either one should work with that tarp as they use beastee dee rings for the ridgeline. (well at least that is what is featured in the picture)
However if you are leaning more towards the tato tarp connectors for convenience in the winter then I would suggest going with those.

Switched from paracord to this and couldn’t be happier. My good ol’ 550 cord trucker’s hitch worked fine but this is so much lighter and doesn’t have any stretch. Been using itabout 4 or 5 years now… have probably used it 25 times and it’s worked perfectly every time. Held up to rain, crazy wind and everything. The wasp only slipped a little once on a snow trip where I got covered in a night of heavy snowfall. Even then, it was easy to readjust the next morning. There is a tiny learning curve but once you’ve used it 2 or 3 times it’s very easy. Weight is next to nothing. Can’t recommend enough.

Very light and long enough. I’m looking forward to using this so this review is only first impressions. I have started using a ridge line in the past couple of years but I have been using paracord and bank line. This ridgeline is much lighter and certainly the thing to use when backpacking. It’s not so much a big deal when say, car camping or bike packing but is definitely something to pack away easily and use when weight is a factor e.g. backpacking and I’m thinking of throwing this in my first line survival kit that I carry when flying (yes, I’m a pilot).
I have only recently discovered hammocks and have a pretty nice setup but I was using a paracord and bank line based ridgeline to hang my tarp. Trust me, a ridgeline makes setting a tarp much easier and this comes into play when the weather is bad. I’ve raised four boys and all were scouts and I have many years as a scout leader behind me and one thing I’ve learned is that you cannot trust the weather report. When the TV weather personality says it will be great weather, count on it to rain/pour/snow/sleet/whatever when you get to the camp site with the scouts. This means you better be ready for it and be able to set up your stuff fast and like it was second nature. Unfortunately, when I used to camp with the scouts I just used a tent. Nowadays, I use a hammock when I can, not always, but a tarp is an integral part of this, and like I already said, it is easier to set up the tarp with a continuous ridgeline, just hang the tarp under the line rather than over it and practice before hand.
I have been using bank line prussicked to the ridgeline itself and have started using “soft shackles” this way but I have most recently been using S-biners (#2) to hang the tarp instead. I believe these biners are strong enough but time will tell. I do this mostly for convenience and it is fast. It seems possible to use the S-biners with the soft-shackles provided here but so far the only knock I have against this product is that these shackles, using the yellow zing-it cord in my case, are quite a bit fiddly, i.e. they are not so easy to use and in foul weather when time counts I’m not sure how easy it will be to secure a tarp (or whatever) to the ridgeline using the shackles. I may need to use S-biners to keep it easy. Again, I have yet to use this camping so this may not be an issue but we will see come spring time. Otherwise, everything else about this product is top notch including the line and the “wasp” and the Dutch hook spliced into one end.

I love continuous ridgelines and prusiks but the line here, while light and extremely strong is too slick so the prosecs can’t bite into it. Over just a couple hours the tarp sags as the prusiks slip. Similar line with a polyester sheath is a lot better in this application. I went back to the two piece Stingerz, even though they are harder to adjust, because of this.

I’m a senior and a newbe to hammocking The continuous Ridgeline is fully assembled with all the attachments connected to the line. Because of this it makes for really easy attaching the tarp. Around the 1st tree and hook it to itself. Cross to the 2nd tree, place the Wasp about 2 feet from the tree and then around this tree and back to the Wasp, tighten and tie off. Move the Taco connectors toward each tree and place the tarp over or under the Ridgeline. Attach the Taco to each end of the tarp then tighten and then stake off.

I’ve outfitted my hammock with a bunch of Dutch’s gear and never been disappointed. Always look forward to the package from Dutchware to arrive. Recently upgraded my Hennessy hammock tarp to a OneWind w/ doors. Wanted a solid ridge line and knew were to go. Picked up the continuous ridge line w/ soft shackles and wasp attached. (The wasp is one of the greatest accessories ever!) and saw the line spooler and grabbed a large one. Perfect! Ridge line is top notch with the wasp and the line spooler keeps the ridge line all nice and tidy. Get this combo for your hammock tarp, you need it! Always a pleasure doing business with Dutch.

Is there a benefit to one over the other (soft shackles vs tato tarp connector) or is it really just personal preference? This is the most simplistic ridgeline I’ve used or tried to create since I started Hammocking more. The only downside was the tato connectors I opted for, simply because my tarps pull outs aren’t big enough to easily slide them through but that is my own mistake. I’m definitely getting another one and keeping the one for my fiance when she gets a tarp though because they are that awesome. Highly, highly, highly recommend this for anyone who wants to set up a shelter within minutes.

I love the CRL except that when I am packing up in the morning I notice that there is always slack in the line. When I set it up it tight as a banjo string. I do wrap the string over the tail as instructed. Saturday night was my third use of the CRL and same thing happened. Happens in dry or wet weather. Any ideas why its always slack in the morning?

Pros: quick to setup, easy to use
Cons: the tato connectors allow my tarp to droop
I haven’t tried the prusset knots, but I’m not a big fan of the tato connectors. They attach very quickly and easily, but they allow too much sag in my tarp. They also will slide along the ridge line if it rains. Also, the wasp seems to loosen over night as well.

Absolutely love this ridgeline.
Absolutely love this ridgeline. I went with the yellow zing-it for the ridgeline and the grey lash-it for the soft shackles. I used this to set up my Kelty Noah’s Tarp 12′ tarp in the middle of winter. Lots of ice formed on the line and on the hardware, but I was still able to undo the soft shackles (which is what I was concerned about), and was easily able to chip off the ice to still allow me to slide the wasp and cinch everything up.
I already had a continuous ridgeline that I made out of paracord, but there is absolutely no comparison. This held its tautness the entire trip, was super easy to adjust, and was setup in even less time than the already short time I had before.
I swear by this ridgeline. That said, if you’re a DIY’er, this is extremely easy to make on your own, but if you’re like me and just want to get stuff made sometimes, this is worth every penny.

Have used this on many occasions in mild weather and works GREAT! But, this last weekend the wind was a steady 30 mph and the prusiks just wouldn’t hold and kept slipping. Ended up running it under the centerline of the tarp for lifting support and using zing-it to stretch tarp. Middle of the night the hook end cut the line and I lost all lifting support. I have already repaired the cut end and will continue to use this for my tarps because it is such an easy setup. Just not for extreme winds.

Bought this to replace the line on my Yukon Walkabout Rain Fly.
Bought this to replace the line on my Yukon Walkabout Rain Fly. That tarp just covers my hammock and it was slow to setup and hard to adjust with the original lines. This continuous setup, combined with tarpworms and Lash It for my guy lines has made setup a breeze now. I still need to perfect packing everything for the most efficient setup, but this has already been a great buy. I also plan to upgrade my tarp down the road and I’m sure this will work great for that too. Only issue I had at all is I added the Tato pieces to the CRL too and they are hard to get in and out of the small circular holes in my tarp. They would work much better with the more typical D-rings. This isn’t a big issue, as I keep my tarp attached to the CRL. If I took it off and on frequently with that setup, I think it might break the Tato pieces over time.

I’ve just received my second continuous ridgeline from Dutch. As always the service was super quick and problem free. My first CRL is still going strong after a year of being used and abused and shows no signs of breaks or wear. Being kayak campers on Georgian Bay we have lashed the line around trees, and posts, and concrete, and rocks, and used it for all sorts of purposes that I’m sure Dutch never envisaged but it still as good as new. The only reason I ordered a second one was to go with a second tarp. I figured that if I have something that works, then why change it.

Dutch personally emailed me back an hour later with some questions clarifying exactly what I wanted. Very impressive! Carolyn followed up on Monday, with instructions on how to submit the order. Yep, I screwed it up anyway… Emailed her and she quickly replied saying she made the correction on her end. A day or two later Chris emailed me to verify exactly what I wanted. The hook is not attached like in the picture. It comes with the hook end through Zing-It loop, not the hook’s ring. So you need to unhook it, thread the line through the ring, hold on to the hook while wrapping it around the tree, then carefully clip the hook back through the tiny loop. Heaven forbid you drop the hook while doing that because you’ll never see it again. It’s not quite a deal-breaker because it does simplify setup and centering, but why do it that way?
