Chameleon Resources and Notes:

Why Choose The Chameleon Hammock?

Every detail of the Chameleon is designed intentionally. It is a full-featured, 11-foot long hammock, and it comes in a variety of subtle colors — no surprises there. But its namesake goes further than looks. Dutchware has developed the Chameleon to be both versatile and lightweight, able to adapt to its environment on the fly. Simply change out or remove components for the only hammock you’ll ever need.

As multi-faceted as its name suggests, the Chameleon is the ultimate hammock for hikers looking to be prepared in any circumstance. As a hammock with a bugnet and hammock suspension, it can adjust to different elevations and terrains. It can also handle all that nature can throw at it. Even insects in the middle of summer won’t be a match for this bugnet hammock.

Get ready to take your backpacking expeditions to the next level with a truly flexible hiking hammock. Highly functional, lightweight and equipped to handle cold temperatures, the Chameleon will give you the chance to vanish into nature for the weekend!

The Chameleon is a full-featured 11 foot long hammock designed from the ground up. Each of the components that go into the Chameleon have been developed by us to create a versatile and modular light weight hammock that adapts to its environment. Because you can remove and change out components, the Chameleon will be the only hammock you will ever need.

The Chameleon adapts to your needs and is the only hammock you need for every situation. The specially-designed zipper allows you to remove the bug net to go without or replace it with a vented top cover. With the vented top cover, you can take your Chameleon into colder temperatures because it creates a micro climate yet still vents out the moisture produced by your breath.

With many hammocks on the market today, you have to buy all the components with your original purchase. One of the beauties of the Chameleon is that it is very modular and you can purchase components at a later date. Buy the hammock body today, when the bugs come out, buy the bugnet; when winter hits, buy the top cover. If you have the bugnet and top cover already and your loved one wants to come with you on a hike, all you have to do is buy another body and one person can use the top cover and another can use the bug net. If you liked the Dallas Cowboys last year and have a blue top cover and this year they are on a losing streak you can just get a black one and be a Raiders fan.

Additionally, we have many auxiliary components that you can buy to expand your hammock. From peak shelves to bottle holders, you will be able to bling out your hammock to make it individually yours. Once the Kickstarter is completed, our business model is to stock every item so you can purchase them and have them shipped out immediately. No more waiting for a month or two to get your hammock or component. So no matter which direction you sleep in, no matter what the temperature is outside, no matter how many bugs are outside, whether you are alone or with a friend, you will have the perfect hammock every time.

When you sleep in a hammock, you want to position yourself diagonally so you get a flatter lay. With the patent pending zipper, you can flip over the top cover or bugnet so you can lay in a different diagonal direction. This is not only important to give you the freedom to lay in the direction you desire, but the Chameleon will also enable you to match up with another Chameleon hammock to essentially create a two person hammock that uses the same trees and tarp.

a gif of a person sleeping in the chameleon in different positions

If you’re going out hiking or just using the Chameleon to lounge in the back yard, beach, or the park, the bugnet or top cover is completely removable. This means you don’t have to carry any more weight than you need for any given adventure.

When there are bugs, the Chameleon has you covered. With our special nanoweave bugnet, even the smallest biting, stinging, disease-carrying parasite will be kept safely away. The zip on bugnet is everything you desire. Light, durable, and with great visibility, our detachable bugnet keeps you from being eaten alive.

Dutch using the detachable bugnet on the chameleon

Don’t let a dropping thermometer keep you from enjoying the great outdoors. Our vented top cover will go in place of the bugnet on the same zipper track. The fabric is our proprietorially-designed ARGON 90. It is breathable yet wind resistant. It will help keep your body heat in, creating a micro-climate inside your cocoon of warmth. The vent is designed to not only allow the moisture of your breath to exhaust, but also to give you a window into the world.

Dutch using the detachable vented top cover on the chameleon hammock

We put a lot of thought and effort into the functionality of the Chameleon. The modular design of this hammock allows you to add additional products, some of which we haven’t even fully designed yet. The Chameleon is 11 feet long as the standard model and you don’t have to pay extra and it isn’t an upgrade. There is no such thing as too much of a good thing when it is this good. This will give you more room and a larger sweet spot for a flatter lay. Those who know hammocks, know size matters.

The Chameleon comes with a unique tie out system. The secret to getting a good flat lay in a hammock is to lie diagonally. There are adjustable tie outs at your head and feet to give you the required symmetrical shape for a comfortable sleeping position. There are two on each side that are adjustable from inside the hammock providing more tension to keep the bugnet off of your face. Also, these tie outs are movable so that when you want to change the direction, you simply unsnap them from the D-rings and move them to the other set.

a close up of the dual adjustable tie outs

The Patent Pending vision zipper is a toothed, rather than coiled, zipper for ease of use and strength. The vision zipper is the key to this hammock and why the Chameleon outperforms every other hammock on the market today. Our zipper is the first one of its kind and starts with a toothed zipper such as you will find on high end jackets versus a weaker coil zipper. There are two zipper pulls that can be positioned at any place for easy access. The zippers are opposing so they open in between and most importantly you don’t have to reach to the top of the hammock to open it. Furthermore, the vision zipper can be flipped over and reversed, this enables you to flip the top cover or bugnet over or around so you can lay in any direction. We made each Chameleon with two of these specialized zippers so you can enter/exit the hammock from both sides and you can reach out to adjust your underquilt easily from inside the hammock. Lastly, since the zippers are separating, you can go with any top to save weight, add a top cover or bugnet in the same zipper track and only have to carry what is needed on your adventure. This is how your Chameleon changes to your environment.

I ordered my Chameleon and was not a bit patient waiting for it to arrive. It arrived on a rainy day during which we had flash flooding. One it stopped raining I had to see how it hung. Then I sat down in it. Unbelievably comfortable. I streached out and was so flat. I am very impressed. Now the weather needs to improve so I can have a weekend out in nature.

    Another Happy Hammock Camper

    I own two Chameleons now.
First one I bought was a Hexon 1.6 that I have made a few trips using mainly a top cover w/moonlight vent. I love this hammock and love the add ons that Dutch keeps coming up with. I do own several add ons and they all have a purpose for different trips.

Second Chameleon I just recently purchased because of the new Cloud 71 fabric. The light weight is what originally interested me in getting another Chameleon in this fabric but what I quickly realized is how much I enjoy being able to see out through the hammock when inside. It’s like your hammock is made out of a strong bug net. It’s Awesome.
Then once I put my underquilt on I was able to really fine tune the placement because I could see exactly where the quilt was through the hammock fabric.

    For reference, I am 6’2″ and 205lbs
My Hexon 1.6 is a Wide Chameleon and my Cloud 71 Chameleon is standard. I do wish I went with a wide cloud 71 but I originally was going for the lightest weight possible. It’s still very comfortable but the Hexon 1.6 Wide is a bit more comfortable.

I hope this helps anyone thinking about sizes and fabrics.

    Question

    ssabolchic

If selecting the double layer option, do both layers need to be the same strength or could one of the layers be 1.0 and the other 1.6? If so, which layer would be the supporting layer and need to be the higher strength?

You can mix the different weight fabrics for a double layer and we normally recommend that you put the 1.6 on the outside as it will be more durable and the 1.0 will be the softer fabric that you will touch.

I love, love, love this hammock!!! My first hammock was an ENO and it was ok for a beginner. But as I started hiking more and needing to cut weight from my backpack, I went with the Chameleon. 100% no regrets!!! The ability to add or take away options from this hammock make it number one in my book. I purchased the Hexon 1.6 with the symmetrical bugnet last year and just recently ordered a new asymmetrical tarp. Everything is super lightweight and easy to set up. Bye bye ENO!!

Dutch makes great quality products and the customer service is the best!!

I just got my cloud 71 last night and slept out in it. One thing that I totally am in love with is the fact that you can see through the “wall”. One of the reasons I hammock camp besides the comfort is the view. It was always a pain that you couldn’t see out one side of the hammock because of the hammock material. Dutch has now solved that problem. What’s he going to come up with next?

Buying a second! LOVE my Chameleon Hammock!

    livinrvstyle

My first Chameleon Hammock is a thicker double-layered hammock with two removable sidecars, bug net, and top cover. It is a bit heavy, because of the fabric and options I chose, but I didn’t care because this hammock is for car camping. It was also my first hammock with a ridgeline. I also got the dutch hook suspension. Expensive but sooooo worth it! I haven’t used any of my other hammocks since getting that one. I am ordering another one, lighter weight, for backpacking and my BOB. I will probably get rid of all but one of my other hammocks when that one arrives. I can’t say enough about the quality of the first Chameleon I bought. I have yet to have any problems or issues. The expense is worth the quality, reliability, comfort, customization, and options you get with this hammock! I highly recommend the Chameleon hammock if you like these options and the Duch suspension!!!

After saving up I finally splurged and got the Hexon 1.6 with asym net, Whoopi’s slings-and 4 ft straps. I’m 5’10 225 lbs. btw. Wow… what a setup.. I’m a relative newbie to hammocks but this thing is so comfortable compared to anything else I have had. Everything looks very well made and top quality, built to last.. should I have to buy another, this would be the one.. can’t wait to take it out on a trip.. Only sorry I haven’t got one sooner.. Save yourself some time and money and get Dutch and his crew to hook you up right the first time!!

    Kevin Flannery (verified owner)

This is our family’s third Chameleon. My husband loves his in the heavier fabric. Our daughter has one in the lighter fabric. I liked the softness of hers and the stability of his. So I found the double layer hammock to be just right. Lighter fabric inside for softness. Heavier outside for stability. A place in between for my sleeping pad until I purchase an under-quilt. I also purchased the peak shelf. SO HANDY!

As always, the service was excellent. I did have to wait a few weeks after placing the order, but that was clearly stated up front. I can’t wait to take this camping in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

    Oh thank God

    jcharms77 (verified owner)

I was a chameleon away from giving up on hammocks all together. I have had Amazon ones and the eno, blah. They have creepy sound when moving and fabric reminds me of 1st grade pe were the parachute comes out. Also they feel like bar running through the middle. I have thankfully ordered the 1.0 olive green with beetle buckle straps and sidecar. This fabric is closest thing you will get to a sheet set. Also it has a touch of bounce. Yey! The pullouts, although I didn’t seem them necessary, are great for a novice as a guide to were to lay diagonal. Sidecar sure is swell as well. It’s nice to get nice and comfy and then just reach over and pull out blanket instead of dealing with it right when you plop down. My only negative about the hammock is my bugnet, which was all my fault. Depending on view or sun angle, sometimes I lay left or right. Had my old man eyes on and ordered the asyum. net. Great for one direction lay, which isn’t me. Will have to order semetric one now and be stuck with this one. Bummer. Anyways if you are on the fence about your first real hammock purchase, jump. Come smack me if I’m wrong

Thanks for my late Xmas present to myself… (Hexon1.6 Double Layer Coyote outer and Burnt Orange inner). I’m 5’10” 250lbs I took it straight into the woods to hang in my lunch hour! First impressions top quality and love the contrast stitching on the outer layer and the feel of the material. Very comfortable lay, loads of space… Quality of the stitching and material is top notch I like the tie outs and the clips to hang my quilt. this has definitely moved my hammock camping to the next level. Getting used to the beetle buckles as I previously used whoopee slings, they seem pretty straight forward, easy to adjust and lock off with no slipping… I just need to see if there is a way to stop them twisting (or if it makes a difference). The only problem now is I want one with a black outer and poppy red inner 😉 I will definitely be coming back to Dutch for more gear – also have an eye on his Argon Wind Jacket and a Tarp.
    Keep up the excellent work!

    arikol (verified owner)

Just received my Chameleon today. Haven’t had a chance to sleep in it yet, but have tried resting in it for a while, as well as playing around with the suspension (som magical lightweight stuff with fairy sprinkles on… they weight is slightly amusing and a bit scary).

Based on the testing so far this hammock is by far the most comfortable one I own. By a wide shot. I took Hexon 1.0 which is frighteningly thin and impressively light. I sat in it very gingerly at first, but now it has become clear that it is stronger than it appears!
Nice texture, really nice support, conforms well to the body and (importantly) I could feel no calf ridge whatsoever.

The bugnet zipped on perfectly, very nice design of the zippers.
The design and placement of the underquilt hooks, as well as the tieouts is really good.
All workmanship is top notch (as I expected based on all reviews).

So far, so good. I really look forward to a full night in this thing; half an hour taking it easy in the hammock was enough to put me in a semi-comatose state.

Better than I had thought a Hammock could be!

    Gary Roudebush (verified owner)

I have been a happy ENO hammock user for a few years. I decided to buy a chameleon after researching some of the YouTubers like Spiguyver Backpacking and his reviews. I honestly was just looking for something with an attached bugnet. I got the chameleon, set it up (which was easy) and from the first time I laid in it I could feel a huge difference. It was like driving a Cadillac after you had driven an old dodge. The material (Hexon 1.6) was amazing. No calf ridge and perfectly flat lay. If you could lay in a cloud, it would feel like this. After lounging in comfort for a while I started to look it over closely. Whoever does the work on these doesn’t get paid enough. They are real craftsmen or women. The bugnet even is amazing. It’s almost like pantyhose material, not a mesh. Nothing will get through it. The only downside is I waited a few days too long to order after their 15% sale had ended so I paid full price, but it was still worth every penny. If you think you have a good setup, you don’t unless you have one of these hammocks. Thanks to all at Dutchware.

The most comfortable hammock on earth!

    chris.ofsthun (verified owner)

Seriously, I own multiple different ENO hammocks for lounging around and I’ve been camping in a Hennessy Hammock since 2013. The ridgeline built into my hennessy hammock has stretched and it was just time to upgrade. I after watching every video possible on YouTube of reviews and information on every hammock available on the market, I settled on the Dutchware Chameleon for it’s versatility and ability to be customized to whatever I needed at the time. This was key as I do a lot of motorcycle camping in many different climates. I slept in it over 2 nights this past weekend and those were the best nights of sleep I’ve had in a very long time. Just a down right amazing design and the most comfortable hammock I’ve ever slept in. Thank you Dutch for the great hammock.

I have been hammock camping for a few years and the only disappointing thing about upgrading to this system is that I didn’t do it earlier. I just set it up for the first time yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to hang this hammock. The lay was perfect without any tweaking and the suspension system couldn’t be more simple. The customization is well thought out and I look forward to many comfy nights in the woods!

Excellent Products, Great Quality and Customer Service

    Robert Campbell

I bought several items from Dutchware for use with another hammock and tarp. But I decided that I wanted more room and flexibility. So I tried a regular Chameleon with a sidesling, peak shelf, symmetric top and bugnet. I haven’t had a chance to give the products a thorough field test. But as someone new to hammocks, I found it easy to get comfortable, no matter how I chose to shift my sleeping position. Before ordering, look at Dutch’s YouTube videos, or give them a call, especially if you’re trying to decide between a wide or regular hammock and symmetric vs asymmetric net and tops.

I ordered this item with 1.0 (interior) and 1.6 (exterior) along with symmetrical Bugnet and continuous loops. Very glad I did this as it was nice to find a hammock that was (according to a fellow hammock user I met this weekend) “adult size” lol. It arrived on a Saturday along with a few other items I ordered and so I took it out that same night. Was nice to get a great nights sleep. Still need to make a few adjustments to get it just right but I am glad I made the choice to buy this hammock.

The Whoopie Hook is spliced onto the Whoopie Sling so it hooks to the Continuous Loop. The huggers do not come with any hardware.

    Fantastic product and service.

Ordered my Chameleon Thursday of previous week, arrived on Friday … delivered from US to Scotland … very impressed.

Love the product, quality was everything I expected. Took it out for a quick over-night beside a loch as couldn’t wait to try it. Very comfortable, the Hexon 1.6 has an interesting and pleasing texture. Feels less slippery than other hammock fabrics I’ve tried.

Only negative is that one of the pack hooks snapped over-night, first head end left hook. Had my Cumulus under-quilt snapped into the hooks using 3mm shock cord. While I’m a head right / feet left sleeper, I do move around a lot at night so it’s possible I over stressed it, but seems a bit odd that it broke on first use.

That aside, super happy with my purchase and look forward to many more nights with it.

Thanks for sharing with us Andy. So glad you are enjoying your new setup. It is indeed odd that a pack hook would break like that. Since you are in Scotland, shipping back and forth to repair may not be ideal. Search our site for “quilt hook” and see if any of those options would be suitable as a replacement and send us an email at [email protected] if you’d like us to send a set of them out to you. Happy Camping. – Gwendolyn

This is the only hammock I’m ever going to use. It’s modular so you can customize it. I’ve got basically every mod for it (side car, peak shelf, ridgeline organizer, and I use an asym top) and they all fit together seamlessly. I have more useful storage then any of my tents ever did. Set up is a breeze and it’s comfortable and beautiful. Just typing this makes me want to take it out of my closet and hold it like a baby because I love it so much.

Yes, we encourage you to lay it on top of a waterproof fabric as the Chameleon itself is not waterproof. And you’ll need to be certain to tie out your trekking poles correctly. And yes, you can keep your bugnet and/or top cover on when packing up and for storage.

Best hammock I've found in all my research.

    donniedt89 (verified owner)

I absolutely love this hammock system. The problem I have had with other hammocks that have bug nets attached is when the bug net gets a rip in it the entire system is damaged. I love that this system allows the bug net to be removed and replaced if needed. Since purchasing the initial system with just a hammock and bug net I have purchased a sidecar, side sling, breathalizer, peak storage, and a top cover. I should mention I’ve ordered two of everything so my wife can sleep in style as well. I love that these accessories exist and the design is genius, I cannot recommend this hammock enough. When you compare the cost to other quality brands the value is great here and you can build your collection as you grow as a hammock camper.

WOW! Just wow!Sadly, I cannot give more than 5 stars for this hammock.

    Customer Service:
The hammock was ordered on a Monday and arrived on a Friday. I was utterly floored that it shipped that quick. Prior to purchasing the hammock, I called a time or two and asked questions and chatted online and never had a problem reaching someone. On one occasion I was even called back after leaving a message.

    Quality:
No tags of thread, excellent craftsmanship and top quality fabric and materials all around! This is what quality is supposed to look and feel like. This tent is worth every single dime spent on it. You have to see this hammock to understand the quality of it.

    Summary:
Do not hesitate to purchase this hammock. You cannot go wrong with it at all. I plan on buying another for my son once he is a bit more mature and is ready to really make the leap into hammock camping and not so much just lounging around at camp. In closing, thank you Dutch for an excellent product once again. This is a paradigm shift in hammock camping.

It does have less stretch and support more weight. I like to use 75% of the combined weight limits. For example Hexon 1.0 is 200 so it would be 200 + 200 x .75 = 300 pound weight limit. It is a conservative method but the one I have been using.

2 Chameleons, 75+ nights, 1 satisfied customerMy wife and I each own a complete Chameleon setup and hang in our backyard nearly every night. Each hammock is made with 1.6 Hexon and extremely comfortable. I love the integrated bug nets and haven’t been bitten once by the notorious Alaskan mosquitoes while zipped inside the Chameleon.

I have two peak bags and the water bottle holder for each Chameleon. These items are awesome and work as advertised, and are especially handy for us as our hammocks are left hanging up most of the time.

The only feature I don’t love is the side pull outs at the head and foot ends. I came from knotty mods on Dutch’s Netless hammocks, and prefer the way those deal with excess fabric, but understand that knotty mods won’t work with the zippered tops of Chameleons. The pull outs work, but I don’t like the way my UQ fits with them, or stepping over the shock cord while walking around the hammock, especially under a tarp. This is a minor inconvenience though and overall I love these hammocks. After sleeping outdoors in them nearly all summer long, I haven’t noticed any wear or problems whatsoever. I have not used the cold weather top covers yet.

Great job Dutch, I highly recommend the Chameleon!

Amazing? Yes.I just got my Chameleon 1.0 Hexon with a bugnet. I set it up in my backyard over the weekend, and slept like a baby! The lay was perfect, right off the bat. I’ve gone from a Byer of Maine hammock, to a Dutchware 11ft netless, and now I have the Chameleon. I’m not expecting to need a new hammock for a VERY long time. If you come across me on the trail, you’ll find me sleeping with a smile, swinging from this hammock.

I know, nowadays it’s America first. But still I am happy that I can lay comfortably in my chameleon now. I got the Hexon 1.0. It is light and so far solid. Although I couldn’t imagine that ultra-thin fabric holding my 75 kg it does. The bug-net gives me a panoramic view while being spared from falling cherries – and bugs of course. Not so many bugs here yet. Maybe they also heard of “America first!”

The C is faster to set up and adjust (beetle suspension, continuous ridgeline), much more comfortable, and incredibly cleaner in design and construction. The dual zippers are a great convenience. Quality Craftsmanship & Customer Service I’ve been enjoying this very comfortable hammock since i received it. I might have to order another in-case I wear this one out. The second day after receiving the hammock i was studying the quality of the stitching and looking over the hammock as i was waking up that morning(still laying in it), I noticed somehow there was a hole in the bug net and I was wondering how that could have happened because I was being careful not to be careless with the use of the hammock. I called to inquire on the longevity and get a idea of the normal wear and tear of these bugnets, I believe it was dutch i spoke with and well before i could really explain how much I’ve enjoyed using the hammock he had another bugnet sent off in the mail to me. I’m Thankful for the Great customer service and I’m very happy with the quality of the product.

I just wanted to say how fantastic Dutchware’s customer service is!

I ordered a double body chameleon hammock. When I received it I noticed some stitching was not properly done when backstitching. I emailed them about it and they left the ball in my court to make a decision.

After a week of my own indecisiveness I reluctantly told them I would fix it because I needed it for an upcoming hike.

They emailed me back right away, told me not to worry about it and they would make a new one.

3 days later I have it in the mail and all seams are perfect!

    Thanks DUTCH!

My Warbonnet Blackbird XLC is now gathering dustAfter a test hang in my back woodlot, decided to take my Chameleon Hexon 1.6. on a five-day bicycle camping trip on the Great Alleghany Passage instead of my tried and true Blackbird XLC. Whilst I love the Blackbird, the hexan Chameleon cradles me and sleeps soooo softly even though I a big (and old) guy at 6′ 6″ and 252lbs. . An excellent flat lay with no calf ridge to speak of. Moreover, I don’t migrate to the foot end during the night like I tend to do in the Blackbird.

The quality, as everyone has mentioned, is beyond compare as is the service. I highly recommend this hammock. Ditto for the strap and Beetle Buckle suspension.–so nice to be able to store the dew-soaked straps away from the dry hammock.

    Versatile, Easy Setup, Comfortable

This is my first experience with a hammock and after looking at the other brands settled n the Chameleon mainly because of the option of adding a bug net or top cover at a later date. Ended up buying everything together but it was nice to have the option. I originally opted for the beetle buckle suspension but swapped out for a whooping sling. Set up is super easy and quick and the bug net can be swapped out relatively easily. The peak shelf was a bit of a head scratcher at first but it is handy. I like the versatility of entry from either side and head left or head right. The choice is yours. I use the Warbonnet silpoly Thunderfly tarp with Dutchware ridgeline and everything works perfectly. Immensely happy to be off the ground and not having to drag my old bones into and out of a tent. And I saved about two pounds pack weight in the process. YAY Dutch!!

Customer service is second to none

The only thing better than the chameleon hammock I received, was the customer service I received after delivery! There must have been some kind of mishap at the post office, because there were a few defects in the hammock body when I opened the package. I contacted Dutch and he immediately sent another body out! I can’t ask for more than that!

If will be a few weeks before I take this sucker camping, but I have hung it and it’s super comfortable. So much more room than my old jungle hammock. And it packs up into about half the space and 75% of the weight. It’s magic.
I topped it off with Dutch’s hex tarp and this system is bombproof! The tarp squashed into a tiny bag and practically disappears. It’s so light and small! But when deployed, it’s almost twice the size of my old diamond shaped tarp. It’s rather huge!

I’m telling all my camping buddies about this site. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase anything from Dutch.
Thanks for being a great company!

    Awesome Product, Better Customer Service?

I bought my Chameleon a few weeks ago and due to the heat in South Carolina I have only been able to try it once. What a great feeling hammock! I have a car camping trip booked in October and another in November, I can’t wait to put it through its paces. Dutch customer service answered all my questions late into the night and were always courteous. Awesome company.

BRILLIANT!!! 10 is not good enough.

I was in a rush for a last minute trip and boy did dutchwaregear deliver!! Customer service 10. Bling 10, Chameleon Hammock…. 1000000. I thought my other hammock was nice, this brilliant piece is outstanding!! Incredibly light, ultra compact and the quality of the sewing is just amazing. I have been hammocking for about 3 years now with another exceptional piece if kit but, this hammock really takes the bar to a new level. The simplicity of the design and modularity make it a snap to go from one season/setting to another with just the flip of the zipper. Its so easy to hang and the ability to change the head-end/foot-end by turning the bug net, just BRILLIANT!! 10 is not good enough.

All of my other hammocks are now obselete

I backed the chameleon on kickstarter, and while I’ve only taken it out on a couple of trips, it’s already been put through it’s summer time testing pretty hard. It’s handled a couple of high mountain 30 degree nights flawlessly. It’s laughed at downpours (with Dutch’s Xenon Hex tarp). And it’s gotten me through some 90+ muggy bug infested days as well. The whole time it took up less space and cost me less weight than any other comparable option I have. It sets up in no time (even on my first hang) as the beetles are just so easy and intuitive to use. It’s hard to know exactly how long it will last, but based on the build quality and Dutch’s reputation for making some of the best gear out there, I’m sure it will keep me sleeping comfy for years to come. Worth every penny!

    Worth every penny!

I got a chance to go out and use my new Chameleon, and I have nothing but good thing to say about it. The setup is so easy, it took no time to feel just right. The hammock is the 1.6 hexon, and has just enough stretch that that perfect hang is easily achievable with very little adjustment. Flipping the bug net around for a different lay was also very easy while it’s already set up. I have to say, I was worried about whether this was a wise purchase, already having a WBBB XLC, but the Chameleon is definitely my new go-to hammock. The Beetle-buckles took a few minutes to get used to, but once you’ve got the idea, they’re beautifully simple, and everything is so light! Thank you, Dutch!

    Wonderful Design!!!

Slept in my new Chameleon (wide version) this past weekend for the first time. Was wonderful!!! Would buy this hammock over and over…no calf ridge and no shoulder squeeze. I am 6’2″ 230 lbs with wide shoulders. Was hoping the peak bags would replace the shelf that I so love on my Blackbird and they did not disappoint. This is my new favorite…Thank you Dutch for a wonderful product and congrats on a great Kickstarter campaign.

    Very impressed!

I have always loved Dutch bling, but this hammock is something else! Very comfortable, no calf ridge for me, you can sleep in either direction, no shoulder squeeze. The suspension is one of my favorite aspects. I have never liked putting my straps in with my hammock as they often have pitch on them. The new suspension system allows me to set my straps loop the the hammock on and bam! Dutch also has put a ton of little hooks around the perimeter. It holds my under quilt perfectly in place all night without needing to adjust. Even having zippers on both sides of the hammock is great so that I can easily adjust my pull outs from inside the hammock. Thanks for making such a great product!

    Impressed!

Just like a lot of folks, I’ve tried dozens of hammocks, and thus is truly one of the best! The 1.6 is an amazing fabric and feels durable as well. The flexibility of the design, the modular nature, and the quickness in which it can be shipped all adds to the allure of the Chameleon. I’d like to add, I requested a custom vent on my topcover, and it was done quickly and looks great! Thank you for a great product, I’ll be ordering again soon!

I Think Dutch is a Genius

In a word, the Chameleon hammock is comfortable. The supple Hexon 1.6 oz body gave me a great night’s sleep and made for cozy, compliant lounging in the morning. The fabric breathes well underneath you and feels delightful on the skin. As a fan of firmer hammocks, I still found the support offered by the midweight Chameleon to be more than adequate.

My first night’s user experience was excellent. Every feature on the Chameleon performed as advertised, and the fit and finish were superb to the last stitch. I wouldn’t really change a thing about this design, and I trust that with more nights spent hanging in this hammock, I’ll discover new uses for all the little features that make it so convenient and adaptable.

I would recommend the Chameleon to just about anybody looking to spend a night in the woods. I think Dutch is a genius.

The fabric breaths well and has just the right feel. Fits up like magic with an HG under quilt. Hopping on the Kickstarter early,,,, early… Was the best decision I have made in a while. Wonderful Hammock

Just tested my new Chameleon last week and all I can say is WOW. I have been using my home-made hammock and bugnet for 3 years now. They are now retired. Not only is the Chameleon more comfy, it is about a pound lighter than my old set-up. So glad I saw this on Kickstarter and backed it. I have the hammock, the bugnet (never thought I’d like zippers, but they work great) two peak bags and the water bottle holder. Everything plays well together. My UGQ underquilt fits like a dream with the cords fitting into the hooks and everything stays in place! I love it! Thanks Dutch for the quality workmanship. My only complaint is that I have to hang everything higher than I normally do as the hammock or the straps stretch out…haven’t figured out which one, but that is a small thing compared to the ease and comfort of the whole system. Thanks again!

    Great Hammock for any use

I received this hammock a little later than I was hoping from the Kickstarter, but it was definitely worth the wait. After figuring out exactly how to set it up correctly, the hammock couldn’t be better. It is extremely comfortable and easy to set up once you know what you’re doing. Bug net works amazingly and I imagine the insulating top works much the same, though we haven’t had any weather on the East Coast that would need it just yet.

I had a small issue with an abrasion on the fabric and reached out to Dutch and his team, and within a few days the issue was resolved. Even if the hammock didn’t live up to expectations, which it most certainly does, the customer support I received was truly second to none.

The hammock may be a little pricey for just a hobbyist but if you are an avid hammock camper or are looking for something lightweight to add to your backpacking gear, then this will absolutely meet and exceed all of your expectations.

this hammock is so cool. so far every time i visited my parents i slept in the hamock and my parents are wondering why i am not sleeping inside again. it is so comfortabel and i like all the little extras. but there are 2 things, which are improvable from my point of view. at night time my isolation matress is slipping away. a friend of mine has a different hammock, where she can put the extra isolation matress in a seperate compartment. And i had little difficuty wit the zipper, i would be good to have them waxed. but that is just the cherry on top of the cream. i am so happy. whereever i travel it is by my side. guys you did a great job.

    Best hammock ever

    Tyler Beckel (verified owner)

Ordered the chameleon a few months back and I loved it before I even got to sleep in it. The quality is amazing. I looked over everything before I took it out and there were no flaws whatsoever. Just as I’ve come to expect from Dutchware. After using it a handful of times now I can say it’s the best hammock I’ve ever used. I can sleep in any position and it’s more comfortable then my memory foam mattress. The bug net and top cover attach and detach with ease and getting the perfect hang is so much easier then with my other hammock (did not have a permanent ridgeline). I ordered the hexon 1.0 for both layers and it’s great. Lightweight, Bug protection underneath, and super easy to use a pad if I do decide. The clips make keeping my underquilt in place a breeze as well and with the tie-outs the bugnet is completely out of my way. If you are looking for a hammock this is the one to get. For any sutti g on the fence about what hammock to get I 100% recommend this. Everything Dutch makes is amazing. Thank you for another wonderful product.

You would be ok in the regular width hammock and the hexon 1.0 would hold you as it has up to a 200lb weight limit. I would recommend the wide for you if you have a bigger set of shoulders on you to help eliminate shoulder squeeze. We normally recommend the wide when you are about 6′ tall and 200-220lbs. You are in between all of this.

WOW!!! JUST WOW!!! I don’t have enough words to say how amazing this hammock is!!! Not only DutchWare has an incredible service (I am a 100% beginner on this and they helped me in every single question that I had, no matter what it was), but the hammock is incredible. Super high quality!!! You setup the hammock and while you are doing it, you are thinking: this is sooo thin!! It won’t hold all my weight… it will rip!!! i will fall!!! You go in the first time a little bit afraid (honestly is soooo light) and there you go!!! not only hold all your weight but you are super comfy!!! My daughter can’t sleep in a hammock (she told me that) you had to see her jumping inside her hammock trying to find a comfortable way of sleeping!!! when she finally found it… deeply sleep until next day!!!

My hammock, had a tiny issue with the zipper and as soon as I arrived from my trip (3 months after my purchased) I contacted them… guess what? I immediately got a replacement!! Honestly, I was super impressed… I felt valued as a costumer… thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!!

The product and the service is worth any penny that you spend!!!

I’m just getting started with hammock camping. My first hammock was a double wide 70D / 210T Tear Resistant Parachute Nylon. After several nights trying to sleep in it I could not get comfortable. The calve ridge was real bad. I tried every adjustment I could but I couldn’t get rid of the calve ridge. I watched several reviews on youtube of the dutchware chameleon and decided to give it a try. I ordered the hexon 1.6 in woodland camo, the symmetrical bugnet and the beetle buckle suspension. After it arrived I set it up and am very impressed at how easy it is to get it set just right. Slept great the first night. The hexon material is great, excellent craftsmanship and great customer service. The beetle buckle suspension it easy to adjust once you get the hang of it, just watch the video Dutch has on the website. I plan on ordering more accessories and hardware from Dutch. Thanks again for a great hammock.

Got this guy with an inner fabric of 1.6 Moroccan blue and an outer fabric of 2.4 poppy red, and am in love. I have never slept this comfortable in anything, not even my bed. The whoopie slings make setup and takedown a breeze. The craftsmanship of the hammock is unbelievable. Every stitch is perfect and no shortcuts were taken. Even with two layers this fabric is very breathable and has just enough stretch to conform to your body, so you don’t feel like you are sleeping on a slab. There is absolutely nothing I would change about this hammock. This is one of the few purchases that has given me no buyers regret. I have used this thing to camp, to chillax in the woods, and to setup on my college campus for a portable work station. It was without a doubt worth every penny spent. Oh yeah, I also called like 10 times to add stuff on my order and the team was super nice throughout the process and answered all questions that I had. Even I would not have been that nice to me lol. The customer service is top notch. Love this company and their products!

I like the idea of zip on any add on you want. I spent less on my whole setup (hammock, tarp, rigging, and stakes) than the tent I was looking at. Spent the day in the carport testing it before a trip in 2 weeks. I have no plans of moving back in to a tent. Thanks Dutch and his team.

As always, a top quality product from DutchWare Gear.

Overall I have no complaints. Just a very comfortable hammock. I’m definitely looking forward to cooler weather so I can spend more time between a couple of trees. .

My only suggestion (as others have suggested)…put a different color continuous loop at one end to help differentiate the head end from the foot end.

    Most comfortable hammock I’ve used

I’ve used Hennessy Scout and Thermarest Slacker before, and this is definitely the easiest to get a comfortable lay in. No scrunching around my feet and the material is soft and not noisy when you roll over. I think the tie-outs help make the lay super comfy, similar to hennessy but its a lot roomier and the material so soft, its just way more cozy. I got it with the Argon 1.0, so it is also quite light weight.

Once again Dutch nails it. I received my hammock and the quality and construction are top notch. It is incredibly easy to change out the bug net and top cover. I chose the Hexon 1.6 and I love the feel of the fabric on my skin. Buy this with confidence.

A silly question…but is it my understanding that this can be configured in a symetrical way? I see the symentrial bugnet was just released, so is it a matter of adjusting the tie outs to make it symmetrical? Thank you!

If I choose the ‘No Suspension’ option, does the hammock still include continuous loops in the channels for attaching a suspension of my choice?

Yes, your hammock will come with continuous loops and a ridgeline. We do one red and one black continuous loop.

The bug net is personal preference as they will have different weights and will have the same purpose but function differently. I would recommend watching the video on them.
      Symmetrical bug net: https://youtu.be/Bdh3mVexlTg
Yes the camo is the woodland camo

I’ve been hammock camping now for 6 years. I’ve owned about a dozen or so hammocks and the chameleon is the best. Super high quality craftsmanship went into making the one I received. If you can’t decide on which hammock to get, go ahead and buy one from Dutch. I got a double layer with hexon 1.0 for both layers. The fabric has the perfect amount of stretch, it will be the most comfortable thing you ever sleep in. I could go on and on about all the features and customization of the chameleon. Over all the chameleon is the greatest hammock out there. Thanks again Dutch

    First Hang

I am brand new to hammocking. I discovered Shug a while back and decided this year I wanted to try a hang. After looking around at all the choices in the market and trying to not be overwhelmed, I decided that the Chameleon was well-liked by people who know.

I bought the whole starter kit: hammock, bug net, beetle buckle suspension, and the tadpole tarp. I missed the part where I needed guy line and ridgeline, so I came back for that, too (Wasp CRL and Hookworm guys). Amazed at how clever these things are. So minimal and so effective. I’m way more impressed than I thought I was going to be. If you’re contemplating starting hammocking, this is a good investment.

Now, it’s too cold in MN (Feb.) for a new-to-hammock person to be outside so far, so I have no true hang experience, but I did put some eyehooks in the basement walls. I have slept in the hammock several times as of this writing in a very cold (45-55F) Minneapolis basement, and man alive…. I did not know exactly what to expect, but the Chameleon is so well crafted and so comfortable! I’ve owned several tents in my life and none are this well-built. I have had good night’s sleep on the ground in a tent, but I’ve never gone 8 full hours without waking up or tossing and turning. I did exactly that my first night hanging in the basement.

As soon as I can get out to try them in the woods and check that last box to make sure it’s as good as it I am sure it is, I’m buying my wife a set.
