I practiced using this before my first trip with it, took it out and demonstrated to all of my friends how the PCT method worked when we arrived at our first camp, showing them my fancy titanium bling, then forgot it was on the rope and at some point when looking for a good branch/tree to deploy it fell off. Ended up using sticks for 3 nights. What I can say is that its a dope little tool, works great on the line I have, and I have now ordered two more.
I think the key is having it on a mini-biner attached to the drawstring on your rope bag, make sure you ALWAYS have it there. As always… dutch makes some really cool stuff!

The stick works good but I wish in the description it said it only works with 1.7 mm rope. Sadly my rope was to thick and I needed to purchase the proper rope. My rope was 2.0 mm I think and your could make it work but it’s a hassle. If you purchase this stick make sure you have the proper rope thickness.

Thanks so much for the positive review. For clarity, it is listed under the product description that “It is specifically made to work with 1.75mm Lash-itâ„¢.”. Hopefully your review will help prevent others from missing this information. Thanks for your support. – Gwendolyn

Ok, I think I might of figured this out? Is the toggle supposed to be attached directly above the food bag? Then hoisted up with a line attached to the other eye hole with another long rope, then when at height used to pull the bag away from the tree floating in between two trees? Like the hoist line pulls it straight up, then you tie it off and use the toggle line to pull the food to the side away from everything, and then tie it off to a different tree that helps you accomplish that?
I feel like this is a riddle or a prize winning puzzle y’all are making us play since we have been waiting for so long for an answer.

Does exactly what it says, and attaching it to the line is simple and pretty intuitive. One big limitation is this: you can only use it with 1.75mm or smaller line. Most dutchware will take accept slightly larger line, but not this. Wish that warning had been in the description, since I use a slightly larger line and am back to a cut down tent stake.

I mean, it’s crazy light, the bear bag and cordage with it are great, what more could you ask for?
For everyone still wondering how this magic works (HINT: it replaces the stick!)

The toggle is wonderful. I think it is the best answer for the PCT style hang. So much easier than trying to tie a clove hitch over your head while holding the line taught. I have bought two of the toggles and recommend them without reservation. If you are looking for info on how to use them, look up videos on the PCT bear hang. Instead of using the stick, use the toggle. Some of the pictures on the product page show how to wrap the line around the toggle.
While the toggle is great, the bag was a great disappointment. The first thing to understand is it is a “throw bag,” not a “bear bag” you might put your food in. The bag is used by putting some small rocks or dirt in it, attaching it to the end of your line and then throwing the bag over the tree branch. I ususaly tie a rock to the line rather than using the bag. Doing this so the rock stays attached for the several poor throws as I work to get the line over the branch can be tricky. Sometimes, the rock sails into the woods and I have to find another. So I was quite eager to try the bag.
Unfortunately, the bag ripped in a catastrophic manner on the second evening I used it. I ended up having to tie a rock to the rope again. The bag was great for the one evening that it lasted. The concept is great. The durability is not.
But you cannot go wrong with the toggle. I recommend the toggle without reservation.

Is there a video up yet? I found a Youtube video of Dutch hanging a bear bag by a different (and less secure) method. Is there a video where this toggle is used?

I have used last month to try it out and I love this toggle. It is a must have item to add to the bear bag hanging kit. It’s easy to use and more durable and reliable than a stick.

will this work with 2.0mm line?

I would stick to the 1.75mm rope as the 2mm rope is a bit of a tight fit

This little thing is great for hanging the bear bag…especially when all of the sticks are a foot under snow. Pro tip #1: don’t try to use this while wearing gloves unless you want to hang the gloves too.
Pro tip #2: That little green reflective cord piece is great for those nights near Blue Mtn Shelter when you’re trying to hang your bear bag but your hands without gloves (see Pro Tip #1) are cold and you slip a bit…and then hear a “twang” as your bear bag toggle is launched like an arrow back over your head so you turn around quick and give thanks to above and to Dutch for thinking to put that cord there because it shines so brightly in your headlamp…ok, that may be a little specific, but you get the idea. Use that little loop around a finger (be sure to remove finger before releasing line) and whatever you do, don’t take that loop off. I love this thing.

Question
Evan Vinson (verified owner) –
Is the toggle just something to hold the loop of the food bag as you pull it up then tie the rope to the tree?
Or will it slide down the rope under the weight of a food bag like that?

The toggle is great, makes using the PCT method easy, but the bag is extremely delicate and the cord is so thin it constantly tangles and burns your hands when raising and lowering the bag. I used this for two nights and the bag is already full of holes. I spent 10+ minutes both nights untangling the cord, regardless of how I wrapped it up the day before. I wouldn’t recommend this for a thru hike. Good idea but poor execution. Giving three stars just for the toggle.
