Is it possible to add a pocket half way down the mesh sidecar to accommodate a pair of hiking shoes or boots to air out without them falling to the bottom?

What material is the sidecar made out of? Is it the Dyneema Composite? I’m interested in the Dyneema rain fly and was looking for a comparison.

Unfortunately this will not work with any other hammock as it is specifically designed to work with the chameleon hammock.

Just the thing to hold my stuff.

    johnruggiero (verified owner)

I’m fairly new to hammock camping but have been camping in a two-man backpacking tent for many years. The one thing I really missed in my hammock was a place to keep my clothes and other stuff dry and off the ground in my hammock setup. On the ground under the tarp worked to a point, but stuff still got wet in torrential downpours and runoff. I got the mesh sidecar so I could put stinky shoes in there to air out and I’m thinking of a second sidecar for the other side. This is a fantastic addition to the Chameleon. The zipper system is genius and took about 30 seconds to install the sidecar. With the bug net, sidecar, ridgeline organizer and peak shelf, everything still fits into the double ended stuff sack and adds negligible weight for the convenience.

  7. Jonathan Burnett

    works as described but...

    Jonathan Burnett (verified owner)

The side-car performed great, and I was able to access my gear stored in it without unzipping the net. but I stopped using it because without using the tie outs, it pulls down the side of the hammock. This meant two things. the weight of items in the side-car would cause a fold in the side of the hammock which would hide the opening, and when you open the net, also hides the zipper pulls. I didn’t try using the tie outs with it yet, so maybe that helps, but I decided that I prefer a gear-hammock suspended underneath.

I request a gear-hammock using the same zipped-in access port concept, maybe in multiple weight-saving lengths, and designed to accommodate an under-quilt in between.

    Question

    gavainm

    Dutch,
I have seen a lot of reviews talking about how they think the sidecar might be too deep, and a few where they use mini-biners to adjust the shape of the pocket. I had an idea this morning that is so obvious you probably already thought of it, but I thought I’d share it.

What if you just sewed a ~5″x10″ (or whatever makes sense) pocket in the sidecar by the zipper edge. Then there would be a place for smaller/heavier stuff that may otherwise fall to the bottom of the pocket?

I use a ridgeline organizer for my small stuff, so I didn’t even think to put it in the sidecar … but for others, that might be a upgrade option they would be willing to add.

    Just a thought.

Best accessory yet for the Chameleon hammock

    Chris Christian (verified owner)

The more accessories that come out for the Chameleon, the more I’m convinced how brilliant Dutch is. The sidecar expands your storage capability for both inside and outside the hammock, and is very functional.

Looking for extra storage space in your Chameleon Hammock, and the peak shelf is just not doing it for you? Look no further, the Chameleon Sidecar was designed for that purpose. VERY versitile, the sidecar can be accessed from outside or inside your hammock, yet does not hinder getting things from outside your hammock when you have the top or bug net on. It can also cleverly be combined with a double dutch setup, being shared between the two hammocks.

Simply zip on the sidecar, and you are ready to go. You can even add multiple sidecars and install in 4 different locations to meet your needs. At a cost of only $40 and adding only 91 to 103 grams, I think you will find the Chameleon Sidecar another Dutch winner.

I created an entertaining video (if I don’t say so myself) on my channel, describing more of the problems that it solves and what you can do with the sidecar.

Sidecar Works Seamlessly With Half Zipped

    greg placides (verified owner)

I requested to see if the Dutch Team could make one for the Half Zipped. It arrived in the mail the same day i was getting ready to leave for a group hang. Sidecar worked seamlessly with the half zipped & it’s application especially in winter with all the extra gear provides massive storage solution.

The access from outside & inside the sidecar while out or in the hammock made access to anything a breeze. The ability to access the under quilt from the inside sidecar zip is plain genius when in need to make any uq readjustments .

This storage will spoil you & may tempt you to bring more stuff, but it will definitely find it’s place in all 4 seasons. I have the mesh version for breathability & ease to see what piece of gear is where.

Outstanding accessory. Who needs a self wen you can have a side car. Loaded it up with all sorts of gear. Very easy to install. You can place it in four different configurations and have two for you gear hogs or maybe one regular and one mesh for airing out wet gear. Can’t say enough about it. Had to take it out as soon as it arrived for a test ride.

Dutch, Love what you and you team does.
    Much Respect! Peace.

bomb bomb diggity!! ( oh wait... am I aloud to say bomb in this context?)

    Jim Bohannon (verified owner)

    The best accessory yet!
30* TQ, jacket and pillow all tucked away. While sleeping I put my rain jacket (rain forecasted for the AM) and pants in there. Awesome!! I also tested it with my winter wool anorak in there. It weighs about 6 pounds. No problem. It fit fine and didn’t cause too much sag or tension on the zippers.

    Sidecar

    Jeff

As with all Dutch’s products, this integrates seamlessly with your chameleon. I think this is the best storage solution for your jacket/pants/clothes for winter camping. It’s big and deep enough to hold all that kind of stuff. When I wake up I can reach over and grab stuff and throw it under my top quilt and warm it up before putting it on. It is quite deep and if you throw a small object in it it’s kind of a chore to get it out if you’re lying in the hammock. I’ve seen some complaints about that, but the depth can be reduced (watch dutch’s video) if you’re just looking for smaller objects to store.

I would say if you’re on the fence about this and you’re not winter camping then the definitely go with the sidesling. It’s much longer and shallower and can still hold all kinds of fun stuff. I prefer the side sling because it runs a few feet along the side of your chameleon and it’s way easier to reach things. Last time out I had a bag of popcorn and my mug just resting in my side sling and was happy as a clam.

5/5 stars and it’s my go to for winter camping storage in my hammock.
