Question
Seth McFarland –
How well would this work as a ground tarp? I want to have the option to ground sleep as some times I travel in desert areas without trees. Would this tarp work setup A-frame style with trekking poles and still keep me dry? How much ground footprint do I loose using a Hex tarp versus a square of rectangle tarp? Thanks!

Carolyn (verified owner) –
This will be fine working as a ground tarp and will be quite large so you should be adequately covered.

So I just took my hex tarp out for the first time, and I LOVE IT! I have one question though, should the grosgrain on the ridge be on top or under? The way it’s made, I am not 100 percent sure… Does it matter?

What is the ridgeline tie outs? Is this an extra or do you need them to attach the tarp to the ridgeline?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
Carolyn (verified owner) –
Ridgeline tie outs are needed to suspend your tarp between two trees. You will have the option to do a separated ridgeline or a continuous ridgeline. We give you suggestions of what you could use on the site.

What is the purpose of the side panel pullouts?

Carolyn (verified owner) –
The side panel pullouts will give you the opportunity to pull the tarp out creating more room inside. You will either be able to use a pole mode or tie it out to a tree if it is available.

This has been the greatest tarp I’ve ever owned. I love to sew my own gear but when it comes to tarps, I’d rather leave it to the pros. This tarp definitely feels like it was made by the pros. I’ll always trust my rain protection to the good folks at Dutchware!

Two questions:
1. I’ve noticed the two ridgeline tieouts are not identical. I’m not sure what that means. They aren’t the same size and one has shock cord attached. I presume that is for a purpose. Could you please tell me what that could be?
2. I selected the side tieout option but I am unsure of how they be pulled out. Would this require two more stakes per side? Or maybe something like the pullouts on the Chameleon hammock I also have?
Thank you.

Love this tarp! Same question as kluemaster above – does the grosgrain on the ridge go on the outside (up) or inside (down)? My gut says outside, but I’d love to hear for sure from you guys. Thanks!

Dave Gantz (verified owner) –
You are correct, the grosgrain ridgeline should be outside, facing the sky.

Small holes and tears can be fixed with silicone bonding seam sealant: https://dutchwaregear.com/product/seam-grip-sil-sealant/
Larger holes can be patched with silicone adhesive patches: https://dutchwaregear.com/product/tenacious-tape-silnylon-patches/
Contact us directly if the holes are bigger than the patches; we do provide custom repair service.

I made a good choice with this Hex Tarp. I’m using it with Flyz on the ridgeline and hook worms with shockcords on the tie outs. Last night was my first night with a decent rain. It kept me, the hammock and my gear perfectly dry. Just shake it out before putting it in your snakeskins. I’m airing it out this afternoon at home before putting it away.
I might get another with the Florida Palm print.

COULDN’T BE HAPPIER
Nicely constructed, the grosgrain. Adds a nice touch to the tarp. Had mine set up for the past 3 days now and still as tight as when I set it up.
Under a pound and half the price of a CF tarp which was a selling point for me.
I’m so happy with this tarp that I will be ordering another one.

THIS TARP IS EXACTLY WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED FROM DUTCH!
This tarp is exactly what can be expected from Dutch! Everything from consistency in quality of materials and workmanship to timely shipping are all 5 stars. The xenon hex tarp came just in time to try out on a rainy day and it preformed perfectly. I set it up in the yard and hung dry all afternoon!

What rain??
This is a great tarp! It’s lightweight, packs up small in my HG silpoly skin, keeps me dry, doesn’t stretch like silnylon and doesn’t break the bank like Cuben fiber. What more is there to say? Oh yea, it’s made in the greatest country in the world! Thanks Dutch! Peace

Excellent tarp, impeccable workmanship. light weight, packs down really small.
Received my order of Xenon hex tarp, Olive last week. Although I was unable to test it in a real situation with rain, i did pitch it during the weekends for a biking trip. It was excellent, lightweight, packs down real small and much larger(yet packs smaller) than the standard asymmetrical tarp that came with my Hennessy hammock. I have no doubt at all that it would prove to be waterproof. Everything was easy to set-up and using the stingerz was intuitive.

You don;t know what you are missing out on until you have it.
This tarp is awesome sauce, this is a huge step up from my Eno rain fly. It is both bigger and smaller in that it pack down and weighs less but seems to have a larger footprint. One thing I missed which seems obvious now that I go back and read it is to not forget your lashit when selecting the Ground Tie outs.

Dutch’s quality control is second to none. This is the best lightweight, 3-season hammock tarp I’ve had or seen on the trail. Combined with my preferred continuos ridgeline and Fleaz tieouts, this hexon tarp is incredibly fast and easy to set up and take down. I could not be more pleased.

Question
Linda McClung (verified owner) –
Should I seam seal the ridgeline? Is adding shock cord to tie outs helpful or not really necessary?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
DutchWare Gear –
It is not necessary to seam seal the ridgeline however it wont hurt it either. The only time we suggest seam sealing is for the side pull outs if you get them.

I am getting ready to purchase another Chameleon would a 12ft ridge-line on this tarp be enough to cover a double set up or should I get the winter version to cover better?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
DutchWare Gear (verified owner) –
The 12′ ridgeline is recommended for the double set up and it wont matter if it is the hex tarp or the winter tarp as either will be good. Please just select the 12′ ridgeline.

Hello, is really the weight difference between xenon hex tarp 11″ and 12″ 95g? it looks like a error to me, having for 1/11 length an increase of one quarter of weight. Or am I missing something? Looking forward to buy one, but this won’t let me sleep. Thank you..

Dave Gantz (verified owner) –
Our tarps are made by hand and each roll of fabric can have a weight difference as well. The 12foot Hex Tarp generally weighs between 400g and 425g.
