There are so many patterns which is cool but I’d like to try and find the one that closest matches the camo from the dyneema tarp. Even if the pattern ain’t the same, I’d like the colors to be as close as possible. Any suggestions?

Bought this originally for her little sister… but big sis always gets her way so she took over. Going to have to order a second one here soon.

Does a great job of not overheating the dog (Siberian husky) in 80+ degree weather in the sun and keeps the annoying bugs off her while she snoozes.

I want it to be good...

    jrandallswanson (verified owner)

    Update:

I’ve now taken this tent on two overnight trips totaling 10 nights. I still wish it came in small sizes because it has a decent sized footprint, but also it seems tall and sags a little. I don’t like the stretchable bungee used to hold the tent up because it slips through the small black adjuster so the first couple of nights it wold be sitting on my dog and I would have to tighten it. Would work a lot better with a non-stretchy rope which I plan on placing it with. Also, we had a terribly windy night and one of the corners is starting to rip from all the flapping. It will be an easy fix, but its only been 10 nights. That being said my dog loves it. After I set it up she stand next to it so I will let her in and then she just chills in it. Gives her a place of her own and doesn’t get my gear wet/dirty.

Original post: My first small concern about it is that I wish it came in different sizes. It’s a little big for the type of dogs I get.

However, I am about to take my dog on her maiden backpacking trip. Set it up last night with my hammock, let the dog in, and she pawed it gently and it ripped down the seam about 1 foot. I don’t expect it to be as tough as her kennel, but she barely touched it. Luckily my neighbor can sew and was gracious enough to fix it for me. Hope it stays up for the night this week!

  9. Question

    gerdescm

Are there any plans to offer a smaller version? I ask because I have a 70 lb dog, no need for a shelter big enough for a 140 lb dog.

My primary concern is the height. It looks like it’s very tall and may not be easy to suspend taught if I’m having to hang my hammocks on the low side (which is common if I need the tarp to be near the ground and wide for a double hammock setup).

We do not have any plans to make this in a varied size. The dog that we have pictured in the pup tent is a blonde border collie that weighs about 40lbs. If you find that you need to go a bit lower you can always hang the pup tent from the tarp suspension instead of the hammock suspension.

    Question

    Ron Walker (verified owner)

This is both question and review. Just back from five nights on the the trail with my 57 pound mutt. The pup tent had plenty of room for my dog and my 70 L pack (which my dog likes to nest against) and my dog’s saddle bags. Also fit in a piece of blue pad for my dog to keep warm on. It worked as hoped. I’d buy it again. But . . .

I could have fit in a whole other fifty pound dog (especially in the cool spring weather when they want to curl up). I say that because it would be great to have another size option. Perhaps about 6 inches less length on each side would make setup easier, reduce the weight, and certainly still fit my dog. Then I could have my tarp ridge line a bit lower if I wanted, and also I wouldn’t have to be worried about rain getting in the the corners of the tent where, because of the size of the tent, the mesh is a bit exposed if the wind changes direction at all. This is especially true if I have to have my tarp high enough to accommodate the 48″ height of the tent. I did get some rain in the pup tent because of that. Not a disaster, but I think fixable by having a smaller tent.

As Greg suggested, netting tie backs might be a worthwhile inclusion.

Not sure what to think about having more solid wall and less mesh, as rockclmb suggested. More solid wall is good in colder weather, fore sure, but maybe not so great in hot weather. Maybe some way of attaching a solid door for the colder trips? Snaps?

So I guess my question was gonna be “Are you able to take these suggestions into consideration when making version 2 of the pup tent.” I don’t really need an answer to that, but it will be interesting to watch how this tent evolves. I am really glad you are making it. It is a welcome addition to my dog’s kit.

  11. Question

    Ron Walker

Hey Dutch, Just double checking the size of the pup tent. I think it is described as 58″ per side (an equilateral triangular prism of 58″ per side). 58″ seems big to me, nearly 5 feet. Is that the correct measurement? Anyway, love the idea. Glad you went with three-sided, not four. I’ll be buying one when the pole add-on gets settled into place.

    Great Idea

    jau1776 (verified owner)

Love the idea. I think this is great for the right dog(s). My mutt was too goofy to enjoy it and ended up scratching at the netting and tore it up. It’s totally my fault and my dog’s, the product itself is standard Dutchware (excellent). I highly recommend this product, but again, make sure your fuzzy friend isn’t a panic-y escape artist.

Now my dog can carry his own shelter

    Greg Wheat (verified owner)

Got this for my 120 lb Lab mix ( Sam ) who likes to join me in the woods. Plan to use it on an upcoming week long backpacking trip and Sam will be carrying it in his pack. Sam must have known that this was his bling as he grabbed the package when it was delivered and did not want to give it up.

Well made and simple to set up. Wish there were some color options.

I recommend adding a couple of tie backs for keeping the skeeter netting out of the way when the netting is unzipped. I will be adding some as it looks like it will be a easy DIY hack.

I did cut an old CCF pad to fit inside that I will have to carry so Sam will have some insulation under him when he is in the tent.

3 Nights, and my Dog, likes it

    rockclmb (verified owner)

Nice Pup, dog tent. Just wish it had, almost a solid door, instead of all bug screen. Still kind of cool out, for my couch dog, ;-). And hard to have the tarp too low, with the pup tent, under it. Maybe 3 or 6, little places (Tabs) to put cord, down lower, on the 3 seams. ( A foot or 2 from the point) To tie up the above part, of pup tent.. Just a thought. Instead of the peak. But I like it, for being so light. Only car camped, so far. Ready to try it out on the trails. Oh, I have a 50 pound Jack Russel Terrier. Lots of room for him. He is always turning around, for the better sleeping positions 😉

It is a decent size tent that I would say a Golden would fit in if that gives you an idea for size. We did have one seamstress sit in the pup tent as a joke and she is about 5’7″ tall. The dog that is featured in the photos is a blonde border collie that is about l40lbs.

    Seems great so far!

    jennaecox (verified owner)

Just received my Pup Tent today! I set it up in my backyard as a test run and my 75lb GSD went right in. She loves it. While this is advertised as a tent to go under your hammock I decided to see if it would hold up without one. I used 3 small stakes to stake it out and ties the top cord to a small branch. It works.
It is definitely roomy enough and the bug netting worked very well. The ship time was super fast.
A couple things I would say to the company:
*It is very loose even when tied up and out to the max. The sides do not stretch they sort of flop inward so when the dog is turning around it is getting touched by the sides at every turn and for a more playful dog invites playtime and trying to play with the loose fabric.
*Offering 3 small stakes with your tent would be amazing!
    * The top cord is very stretchy and elastic. I will be replacing it with a stiffer cord before our trip. As well as possibly looking into a better draw clip the string goes into..as this one doesn’t have a great hold when pressure is applied.
    * I would love to see a freestanding option. We bring our hammocks and a tent while backpacking just in case there’s no hammock options. If this could be both options in one it would really be amazing.
*Considering how small you can roll this tent up to the stuff sack seems oversized. When rolled up and compressed it fits well in a 3rd of the bag provided. (Maybe a way for the company to save some fabric and $)
Overall I like it so far. The real test will be in a couple weeks when we go backpacking for 6 days. I think it will hold up and plan on another review after our trip.
